Little Star Mickey smiles

Answers for parents

Everything you'd like to know about the passport, chats with Mickey and your child's privacy.

What exactly is StarKids?+

StarKids is a cheerful, calm place where children aged 8 to 12 discover what makes them special. With a magical passport, a chat buddy (Little Star Mickey) and cheerful discovery cards, children get to know themselves and their feelings better β€” without pressure to perform or labels.

What does my child's superpower mean?+

The superpower is a child-friendly version of the energy type from Human Design, calculated from the date, time and place of birth. It describes how your child's energy flows best: building, discovering, guiding, starting or reflecting. Treat it as a conversation starter, never as a fixed label.

Why do I need to enter the full birth name?+

The full birth name (as shown on the birth certificate) is used to calculate the expression number: how your child shows their talents. Together with the life path number from the date of birth, this gives a fuller picture. The name is only used for this purpose and is not shared with third parties.

Are my child's conversations with Mickey saved?+

No. Conversations aren't saved automatically, and no one else is reading along β€” not even you. Your child chooses whether to save a conversation or share it with you. Your child can also delete saved conversations themselves. This helps children feel able to ask difficult questions too.

What if my child talks about something serious, such as bullying?+

Mickey listens and asks thoughtful questions first, including when a child mentions bullying. With heavy topics, he always says your child should tell an adult they trust: that is always the very best choice. He also names the free child helpline for your child's country (in the Netherlands, De Kindertelefoon on 0800-0432). If there is immediate danger, he urges them to seek help right away.

How safe is the chat? Will my child get safe answers?+

Yes. The chat works with fixed safety rules: short, age-appropriate answers, the passport as a playful mirror of talents (no labels or frightening predictions), strict boundaries around sensitive topics, and never asking for personal details. With heavy topics, Mickey always points your child to a trusted adult as the very best choice and names the free child helpline of the child's country of residence. In the Parent corner, under 'How the chat is set up', you can read exactly how this works.

Who creates the account: the parent or the child?+

Always the parent or guardian. When signing up, you explicitly consent to the processing of your child's data. Your child uses the app within your account, but the conversations remain theirs.

Can I add more than one child?+

Yes. Within one parent account, you can create a separate passport for each child. The profile switcher at the top of the app makes it easy to switch between children; Mickey and the calming exercises then use the passport of the active profile.

How long is the data kept?+

Passports and saved conversations remain available for as long as you use the account. After 12 months without logging in, all data is automatically deleted. You can download or delete everything yourself at any time in the Parents' Corner.

How do I view, download or delete the data?+

In the Parents' Corner, you'll find the 'You stay in control' section. There, you can download all family data as a file or permanently delete it. Deleting also removes the linked passports and conversations; your parent account will remain.

Which languages does StarKids support?+

StarKids works in Dutch, English, German, French and Spanish. Choose your language using the language button at the top. Mickey, the calming exercises and the situation coach will then respond in that language too.

Does StarKids replace professional help?+

No. StarKids offers playful reflection and general parenting inspiration. It does not replace medical, psychological or educational support. Always discuss ongoing concerns with a qualified professional.

Conversations with Mickey aren't saved, so your child can talk freely. Your child chooses whether to save a conversation or share it with you. Mickey listens first, explores feelings and experiences in a gentle, holistic way, and asks thoughtful questions. If your child tells him something heavy β€” bullying, sadness, fear, self-harm, abuse or feeling unsafe at home or online β€” he always says they should tell an adult they trust: that is always the very best choice. He also names the free child helpline for your child's country. If there is immediate danger, he urges them to seek help right away.

How the chat is set up

How safe is the chat for my child?

The chat is deliberately built around fixed safety rules. Your child only notices a warm, calm conversation partner; as a parent, you can read below exactly what Mickey does and does not do.

  • Short, friendly answers that fit the age: simple words and short sentences for younger children, more grown-up for older children.
  • The passport is used as a playful mirror: traits sound like talents and possibilities, never like fixed boxes or labels.
  • No frightening predictions: nothing about illness, accidents or 'bad' periods. Mickey also never makes decisions about friendships, school or family.
  • Strict boundaries: no sexual content, no name-calling, no violence or scary stories, and no topics like weapons, drugs, alcohol or gambling.
  • No medical or psychological diagnoses and no diet or body advice. With questions about appearance, Mickey stays positive about the body.
  • Mickey never asks for personal details (address, school, phone number, photos) and never encourages contact with strangers.
  • Mickey is honest that he is a computer program, never promises secrecy and never says 'this stays our little secret'.
  • With heavy topics he stays calm and warm, gives no blame and asks no probing questions: he always points to a trusted adult as the very best choice and names the free helpline of the child's country of residence.
  • Mickey deliberately has no memory system: he remembers nothing from earlier conversations and builds no profile of your child. Precisely to protect children, every chat starts from zero again. Only a conversation you explicitly save yourself stays in your account.

Helplines for children

Where children can turn

With heavy topics, Mickey always says your child should tell an adult they trust: that is always the very best choice. He also names the free child helpline for the country where your child lives, based on the country of residence in the passport β€” not on the language or the birthplace. All lines are free:

  • Netherlands: De Kindertelefoon – 0800-0432 or kindertelefoon.nl
  • Belgium: Awel – 102 (Dutch) / Γ‰coute-Enfants – 103 (French)
  • Germany: Nummer gegen Kummer – 116 111 (Mon–Sat 2–8 pm) or nummergegenkummer.de
  • France: 119 – AllΓ΄ Enfance en Danger, day and night
  • Spain: FundaciΓ³n ANAR – 900 20 20 10 or 116 111, chat via chat.anar.org
  • United Kingdom: Childline – 0800 1111
  • United States: 988 (call, text or chat) or Childhelp – 1-800-422-4453
  • Canada: Kids Help Phone – call 1-800-668-6868 or text CONNECT to 686868
  • Another country in Europe: 116 111

For another country, or if the country is unknown, Mickey says the child should tell a trusted adult and points to childhelplineinternational.org to find their country's helpline.

In immediate danger, the child should call their country's emergency number right away (Europe: 112, United States and Canada: 911) or go to an adult right now.
